Legacy already on PocketPC, now in S60v2 and N-Gage , test and work perfect on my Nokia N70 !!!

PocketPc Review here
Legacy, from Hungarian software house Red Shift, is an RPG that breaks
no new ground in terms of gameplay and uses all the standard
ingredients of dungeons and dragons but STILL manages to be absorbing,
compelling and well worth a spin. Why? Tony Newton dons his firelizard
armour and boots of endurance to find out...

On loading (all smooth on my now antiquated but treasured iPAQ 3870),
Legacy opens with a text and graphics based intro that will be
immediately recognisable to anyone who's ever played an RPG on any
platform, ever: nasty bad man with lots of magical powers and
unpleasant henchmen has taken over the country/world/planet/galaxy.
You are the hero/heroine who is going to select a group of adventurers
with a variety of skills and attributes to do battle with his minions
and eventually save the country/world etc etc.

So far, not very imaginative, but nicely presented. Here's what you
see when the game opens:

There's you in the left hand bottom pane. There are three empty panes
to be filled by your fellow adventurers in due course. Notice the
green bar underneath your mugshot which indicates your health
(hitpoints), and the blue bar which shows your manna. For those new to
the RPG jargon, health is what gets eroded when an enemy hits you, and
your manna gets sapped every time you cast a spell.

In the circle is a compass (tap on it to get to a map which gets
filled in as you explore). Below this are two squares: the one on the
left with crossed swords is the button to tap if you want to fight,
and the starry box to the right the one to tap if you want to cast a
spell or use a magical item.

Tap on your character's mugshot and you'll see something like the following:

The hand is for transferring items between characters, the green arrow
for picking things up, the yellow one for dropping them, the red 'x'
for exiting that screen back to the game and the floppy disk icon
for…well, what do you think?

The windows above Ketiara (for that is who you are, although which
character you start the game with seems to be a random affair in terms
of gender and attributes) show the items currently being carried, and
these can be selected and deselected by tapping on the item (the
difference being that carrying an item is not the same as wearing it
or being armed with it). And of course it's always useful to know how
much gold the party has acquired.

The four icons at the top of this screen cycle through additional
information about the character and the quest. It's worth spending a
moment looking at the 'question mark' icon which brings up a status
screen for that character, as this explains the character's attributes
and development.

As we start the game,Ketiara is a level 1 battlemage. She has 0
experience points and needs to get another 520 by hacking away at
spiders, wolves and just about anything else in order to get to level
2, at which stage she gets promoted to be a little bit better at
casting spells and a bit tougher.

Just for comparison, here's what Ketiara looks like by the time she
and her colleagues have saved the world at the end of the basic game.
Incidentally, the numbers in blue indicate that the basic attributes
have been boosted by the wearing of an amulet, ring or necklace that
betsows additional hitpoints, spell points, endurance or intelligence:

A nice touch here, but one that doesn't actually affect the gameplay,
is that equipping and unequipping characters changes the image of them
as shown on this screen. Here's Sierenna equipped with one load of
kit…

…and here she is with a different implement of destruction and some
very different armour.

You can also change your character's names if you choose to make them
more special or memorable, but personally I quite liked them as they
were.

So much for the basic mechanics of the game. This review is not
intended to be a walk through, and I'm not giving too much away to say
that the game opens with you alone in a forest. Having learnt the
basic moves from reading the help file (or this review), you slay a
couple of nasties as you explore your way to the nearest town, where
the adventure really starts.

You learn very early on (though the help of some initial on screen
prompts) that it's always worth looking in barrels and trying doors-
you might find a weapon, scroll or potion- and you're guided into an
inn, a place (and there is at least one in each town you visit) which
fulfils many roles.
Here's what you see at the inn:

Between the four character panes are, left to right, the innkeeper
(always worth talking to), a flag (click this to see who else is in
the inn that you might like to add to your party: you can swap
characters at any inn, and each character has specific attributes
according to their type). Next is a nice diversion: tap on the 'cards'
icon and you are taken into a card game that enables you to test your
skill and win (or lose) gold. I won't spend column inches telling you
how it's played, but here's a screenshot:

Moving further right is a moon and stars icon that allows you to rest
for the night on payment of a fee. Resting cures the various types of
unpleasantness visited upon you in battle (such as paralysis or
poisoning) and restores your manna and health.

So, off you go. Having selected the three other initial members of
your party, you go off exploring, talking to people and being given
quests to solve while on the way to saving the world from darkness. In
selecting your party, be aware that physical strength is not always
the answer and in many cases the ability to cast healing spells, raise
the dead or teleport out of trouble can be a lifesaver. It's also
worth knowing that there are three types of shop in each town: an
apothecary in which to buy and sell potions, magic scrolls and spell
books; an armourer (armour, clothing, amulets etc) and a blacksmith
(weapons).

You'll get to explore towns, go down into caves and up into towers and
generally do all the things that one does in an RPG, all the while
gaining experience, gold and the booty of war. There are puzzles,
moving walls, holes in the floor through which to fall, touch
sensitive plates on walls and floors, switches to find and throw and
altogether a pretty large world to explore which comprises three
different towns each with a number of levels and quests associated
with them, all connected by teleporter. As you move through the towns
the quality of the goods you can buy increases, as does the experience
level of potential party members that you meet in the inns.

Oh yes, and there are plenty of ghosts, ghouls, undead, wraiths,
medusas, plus a bunch of spiders wolves and assorted bug eyed
monsters. Here are a couple of screenshots of my team in action not
only to show the quality of the graphics but also a couple of aspects
of gameplay: characters in black and white are paralysed and cannot
fight, Father Asmodeus (second from right) is poisoned (as shown by
green bottle in front of him) as well as paralysed (it never rains but
it pours!) and the whole team is cursed, as shown by the white arrow
at far right. Not a good situation, but I only let it get this bad for
the benefit of the screenshot (really...!)

and here are some heavier dudes from the bowels of the earth. This
screenshot comes from Redshift's web site. You'll notice that the map
in the centre has been replaced by direction keys, showing that you
can control the game by screen taps rather than joypad if desired:

So…hitpoints, manna, potions, spells, armour class, experience points,
mage, cleric, adventurer, knight, swordmaster…this is all the stuff of
classic D&D fantasy RPGs. Why is it then that of all the RPG's I've
reviewed and played on the Pocket PC, this is the one I've seen right
through to the end (well, the end of the basic game so far…more about
add-ons later)?

The answer seems to me to be in three parts. Firstly, the genre is SO
familiar that you already know the 'rules of the game' before you
start. Secondly, the game controls make good use of the PDA's touch
screen and joypad, so it's easy to move around and make things happen
in this new world. Thirdly, the game design and execution is
excellent: the game really does flow and has a nice balance between
exploration, hacking and problem solving. I got hung up a couple of
times wondering what to do next in dealing with a given situation:
long enough to be intriguing, but not long enough or difficult enough
for me to lose interest in the game completely and not come back to
it. And of course it helps if you engage with the characters, and I
have to say that I stuck with my merry band from start to finish, even
when tempted by heavy duty personnel from inns later in the game. The
various enemies met along the way were nicely drawn and nicely
animated and the standard of graphics excellent throughout (except for
the mildly irritating fact that many of the characters with which one
could interact looked identical and were distinguished only by the
colour of their clothes and hair- but that's probably a function of
trying to save space on the Pocket PC platform).

Legacy didn't crash my Pocket PC in the weeks of playing it took to
get from start to finish: that's a pretty good achievement. But what
about gripes? Well, they're only minor ones. Legacy has a lot of
levels and sublevels and lots of places to explore, but nowhere to
record who you met, or where that hole in a tree was that led to a
cave. The option to 'flag' places somehow (even by just showing
co-ordinates, for example) would be useful, to be able to find them
again without having to re-explore the whole region. The other element
I'd like to improve is the game saving mechanism: there's a great
difference between real time and game time, and showing only the 'game
time' in the saved game window can make it difficult to work out which
saved game you want to load, especially if you haven't played the game
for a day or two. I might remember that the game I saved on the bus
home two night back is the one I want to load and continue from, while
I might not remember whether 'City of Beraquel Day 69, 1:02 pm' or
'City of Beraquel Day 69, 1:14 pm' was the one I wanted. One way round
this would simply be to allow user renaming of default saved game
names.

Looking at the various forums for exist for Legacy
(www.hyperflame.com/toby/legframeset.html is a good one), it's pretty
clear that there are not only the usual issues of players getting
stuck with puzzles, but also a few concerns which a more comprehensive
help file would deal with- for instance, there are some items of
armour that are apparently too heavy for a given character (as
signalled by the exclamation mark that appears next to that item's
icon). 'It's a bit heavy for her' is the message which appears when
trying to equip a character with a particularly useful looking shield
or some groovy ebony boots...but what does that actually mean in
practice for gameplay? And even when that character should have the
strength to wield that item, the 'it's a bit heavy' message continues
to appear. Text is cheap, so more explanation please rather than
making users squirrel around in forums looking for answers that should
be available from within the game package itself.

Being hypercritical, I could also say that the end of the game is
somewhat anti-climactic. Having fought my way to save the world from
the evil Sohl, I think a more dramatic end sequence would reward the
player more for their heroic efforts, repetitive strain injury and
permanently damaged eyesight (only joking!). Look at the closing
minutes of Star Wars or Lord of the Rings for inspiration!

Legacy is a game designed for add-ons, official and otherwise, and the
first expansion pack is already available, introducing new quests, new
towns and new challenges. In fact, I'm off to load it now…and that
really is the best compliment that I can pay Legacy and its designers.
Well done.
