[New] Quake II for S60 3rd Edition!

Oli Hinkka, author of the Quake I port to S60 3rd Edition, has just released the first ever Symbian OS port of Quake II! The current release includes both a
software and hardware (OpenGL) renderer and requires FPU (floating point unit) and about 25-30 MB of free RAM (operating) memory. A version for lower spec'd
phones may be released at a later date.

Five new themes for UIQ 3.x from UIQ Technology

Along with announcing the new UIQ 3.3, UIQ Technology has released five new "official" themes for UIQ 3.x based smartphones: Wave, Lounge, Chilli, Black Build
and Snow. You can download them from this page @ UIQ.com.

[New] WaveSecure Lite for S60 3rd Edition

With WaveSecure Lite from tenCube you can remotely lock your phone with an SMS in case it is lost or stolen, auto-lock your phone when SIM card is changed,
make your phone scream when locked and get notified when someone puts in a new SIM card. You can also preset up to 9 'Buddy' numbers so that when someone
inserts a new SIM into your phone, your buddies will be notified via SMS and you can track down the thief.

Full review: Samsung SGH-i550

It's black, it's a candy-bar with pencil-thin keys, it's got Wi-Fi, a GPS and everything else but the kitchen sink. And yet it's not the (black) Nokia N82,
we're talking Samsung and their new SGH-i550 reviewed right here. Does it match up to Nokia's N or Eseries? And, with generic S60 on board rather than an
extended-for-their-own-use Nokia variant, does the i550 suffer?

Make your own theme/skin for mobiles Easier and quicker theme creation

Thanks to Ricky Cadden for pointing us towards the brand new beta of OwnSkin's Professional Theme Creator. It's a 100% online theme creation application for
S60 smartphones, i.e. no messing around with Java tools or having to install an SDK. Be patient while it's loading up, it'll take a minute or so to load into
your desktop browser but the end result's well worth it. Finished themes can be shared directly or simply downloaded as SIS files for your device.

So??

What are you waiting for.?

Go and make your own skin for your very own mobile phone.

Video review of the Samsung i450

Dubbed the 'poor man's N95', how does the budget Samsung i450 stack up?

Pretty well for the price, actually. I'll have an in-depth textual review here soon, but in the meantime I've done a video review in Smartphones Show 55, out
today. There's also iPhone AppStore/Download! chat from AAS regular Matt Radford and a video version of my push GMail walkthrough.

Symbian wins in High Court Ruling over software patents.

The UK High Court has over-ruled a decision by the UK Intellectual Property Office in regards to their application for a patent for their method of indexing
library functions (reports IT Pro). The UK-IPO had turned down this application, although the European Patent Office had granted it (the UK office does not
recognise patents which are 'nothing more than a computer program,' where Europe does), hence their appeal to the High Court. While the case is concluded, the
UK-IPO office has indicated that it will appeal the judgement.

Nokia N95 hits v21 firmware update

After much expectation in the user community, the Nokia N95 just got its Flash Lite 3/Web runtime firmware update. Although not as big an update as v20 was
(which introduced demand paging and transformed the speed of the device, remember), v21.0.016 is still a major firmware and well worth installing. More details
and screens at nokia.com :)

Nokia Music Store opens in Finland and Germany,The N95 in black? What gives?

The Nokia Music Store is now available in Finland and Germany. Nokia Music Store works on both the PC (Internet Explorer only) and a selection of Nokia mobile
phones. Compatible S60 devices include the N95, N95 8GB, N82, N81, N91 and the N76.
I've been taking a look back and forward at four of the competitors to the Nokia E90. What's it up against in the market for qwerty-keyboarded clamshells? And
how does it compare, spec for spec, blow for blow? It's certainly an interesting form factor and one which is apparently increasing in popularity.

Bery95 has spotted a new N95 edition, set to hit the streets in Germany in April. All very mysterious though - the published specs all refer to microSD and
attributes of the N95 'classic', yet the photo seems to show an N95 8GB. The new edition is touted under the label 'Navi', which could either mean a free
navigation voucher or an extra software bundle. Wish my German was better...

Eggstreme: Sizzler Supremacy - a free Symbian game for Easter

The makers of the free Xmas game Snowed In have come up with a similar Easter-themed free game called Eggstreme: Sizzler Supremacy. It's available for every
Symbian platform (S60 3rd, S60 1st/2nd, UIQ3, UIQ2, Series 80 and Series 90). The S60 3rd version supports all screen resolutions including the N80 and E90.
You can download the relevant game file by going here, and you can get the free unlock code by going here.

Chatting about .mobi

The SXSW interactive festival (happening right now in the USA) is a busy conference, but Ewan caught a taxi ride with James Pearce, Vice President of
Technology for the dotmobi consortium, and asked him about the controversial top level domain for mobile devices, here in AAS podcast 65. Are you convinced
about his arguments for .mobi? Comments welcome.

The official Nokia way to carry the E90?

Good to see Nokia continuing to care for the E90 (though where's the new firmware??), with the availability (via Amazon Germany, at least) of the new "Nokia Carrying Case CP-285" – "made from high quality polyurethane helps protect your device while giving you access to its buttons, ports and speakers." Photo below the break. (via Symbian World)

Nseries PC suite 'graduates'

The Nokia Nseries PC Suite (v2.0) has apparently 'graduated' from Nokia Beta Labs, effective from today. It's not clear whether today's download contains any
further updates, so comments welcome if you're feeling brave. The download shown is only 8MB, so presumably this is just a stub that then grabs the rest.
Anyone care to review it?
Enthusiast Symbian blogger Norman John, based in Germany, has been reviewing the Sony Ericsson P1i - it's refreshing to hear a fresh opinion on this UIQ 3
smartphone. His verdict? It's a 'strong multimedia smartphone' but its 'UI is too tricky'. And he rightly says that you should ditch the built-in Opera for the
also-free Opera Mini.

Apple iPhone SDK Will Finally See The Light of Day on March 6

Finally! After months upon months of mentioning the iPhone SDK, and upon spending its whole existence in the Apple labs, subject to Steve Jobs's scrutinizing
gaze, it looks like the Apple iPhone SDK is finally seeing the light of day. Postponing its supposed February release (hopefully to ensure that everything is
perfect), Apple is hosting a talk on 10 am, March 6 at its Cupertino headquarters. Here's what Steve and co. sent the members of the press: "Please join us to
learn about the iPhone software roadmap, including the iPhone SDK and some exciting new enterprise features,." Fantastic.

Oh,Bamboo: A Degradable Cell Phone Concept

Nokia Remade isn't the only phone concept which looks promising or, at the very least, intriguing. This entry in the Greener Gadgets Design Competition 2008 is
every bit as sensational, although whether it actually hits the stores, I leave that up to time. Called the Bamboo, this is a degradable cell phone concept
designed as an environmental-friendly device. The Bamboo's casing is made of bio-plastic made of renewable natural resources like corn, and Bamboo, which, when
harvested, grows back in due time. What's more, after a year or so and you decide not to use the phone anymore, you can bury the print board, battery, and
antenna in compost, which will then disintegrate, releasing bamboo seeds that would grow into new plants. The phone will also feature an energy-efficient
monochrome display, and a hand-crack with which to re-charge the device. A 3-minute cranking session could provide enough power for one phone call. What better
way to get those arm muscles tones and help save the environment at the same time? More pics after the jump.

iPhone Aims to Conquer Ireland

Apple is really set to conquer the globe. If you need more proof than what you've already seen, then perhaps this would convince you. It's been confirmed that the Apple iPhone is coming to Ireland exclusively via O2 Ireland. The official debut would be on March 14, 2008. The iPhone will be sold in the country through Carphone Warehous and O2 retail outlets. The iPhone versions which would be available in Leprechaun Country are the 8GB model which would be sold at US$600 and the 16GB model for US$750. According to Danuta Gray, O2 Ireland CE: ""The iPhone is changing the way people use their mobiles forever, and we're thrilled to offer it to O2 customers in Ireland. Our strategy in Ireland continues to be to bring our customers the very best innovations and experiences in mobile communications."" Three new call plans will reportedly available for the iPhone which would start at €45. The US, UK, Australia, Germany, France, and now Ireland. Where next, Apple? We reckon it'll be Asian invasion time soon.

No-Key Nokia X-SIM: Unlocking Nokia Phones in a Jiffy

If the service you've bought with your Nokia cell phones has got you grumpy in light of the recent price drops in various American cell phone networks' call
plans, then the No-Key Nokia X-SIM can help you out. The No-Key Nokia X-SIM can unlock your DCT-4 or BB5 Nokia phone in a jiffy. And we're not talking about
tinkering with your phone such that it voids your warranty. You simply insert the No-Key Nokia X-SIM with the SIM card of the network provider of your choice,
and your phone is good to go. This works because based on a locked phone's mechanism, when you insert another SIM inside the phone, it won't work because its
identification system would indicate that it's another network provider. However, the No-Key Nokia X-SIM can totally bypass this identification system,
allowing you to use any network of your choosing. You can buy the No-Key Nokia X-SIM here for US$31.69. "Factory testing shows the No-Key Nokia X-SIM to unlock
2630, 5300, 5700, 6120c, 6110 navigator, 6500c, 6500s, N76, N95, N95 8GB, N61 8GB, E65, N73, N80, 6120c, N75, 6300, as well as all DCT4 and BB5 Nokia mobile
phones. "
